FAQ: How Many Outfits Should I Wear During My Personal Brand Shoot?

First off let’s get this out of the way: there’s no “right” answer.

When I work with service-based entrepreneurs on their personal brand shoot, it’s a highly custom creative plan and shoot experience — from content goals to style, locations to scenes.

For some background, previously I set a specific number of outfits (and: locations) for each package, and many photographers do the same. This type of package is designed with great intention, to optimize your shoot day and spend more time getting great photos, rather than swapping looks.

But now, with my Personal Brand Program I’m offering my clients UNLIMITED outfits. why?

I realized the right number of outfits very much varies by person. For example, if someone has a clean, classic look and loves neutrals, we may just do a couple go-to outfits and create more variety through actions, angles, props, settings and accessories.

If someone’s style visually communicates their personal brand story and service offering (for example, my client who is a stylist herself, or another who’s a trend forecaster with a closet full of fun patterns), weaving in more looks is essential.

This doesn’t mean shoot day should be the wardrobe version of those 90’s TV shows where kids are let into a toy store for two minutes to grab as many things as possible (anyone?). Instead it means it’s custom, we’ll decide what’s right for you together during the 1:1 creative strategy consulting session.

3 tips for planning your personal brand shoot outfits:

  1. As you’re planning outfits are you looking to do an entire look swap, or just a top? If you want to wear the same jeans, hair, make-up, jewelry and just swap a few blouses for variety, you can fit in many more looks.

  2. Do you have the accessories planned in advance? This is a must, plan it all out. For each look, you should plan your shoes, jewelry and accessories prior and have them ready to wear. Before shoot day try it all on, make sure it feels amazing and like YOU. We don’t want to spend precious shoot time debating between hoops and studs, mules or sneakers (but I’ll totally help you narrow that down beforehand!)

  3. Which accessories can quickly change your entire look? Say you wear that go-to dress you feel oh-so-confident in on shoot day. Consider how you can mix it up three ways. For example, the dress paired with: 1. a cute hat and sandals 2. a sleek blazer and booties and 3. a jean jacket and sneaks. Swapping these elements will add variety across your website, social feeds and marketing materials, but keeps it efficient.
